Afrigetics is now FairWild certified for Pelargonium sidoides extract
Afrigetics, an Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) compliant trader in sustainably sourced African medicinal plants based in South Africa, has received a FairWild certification for its Pelargonium sidoides, also known as African Geranium. This marks the first FairWild-certified species sourced from South Africa's Eastern Cape region.
Afrigetics is deeply committed to sharing the valuable phyto-medicinal resources of African herbs with the world. Rooted in conservation values, the organization is driven by the vision of actively participating in the preservation and rejuvenation of Southern Africa's wild spaces and the profound cultural bond with plants. Currently, Afrigetics' collection area with FairWild certification spans 7,000 hectares of the threatened Mthatha Moist Grassland, a vegetation type at risk of conversion for cultivation or dense settlements. Through sustainable wild harvesting of Pelargonium sidoides, Afrigetics aims to foster a regenerative future for this vegetation type and the communities closely linked to it.
“We are devoted to the conservation of Southern African medicinal plants and traditional knowledge through sustainable phyto-trade. Our flagship species, Pelargonium sidoides, is harvested in the rural Eastern Cape using pioneering practices of regenerative wild-harvesting to ensure a positive future for the species and its habitat. Through certifying a portion of our Pelargonium sidoides supply chain as Fair Wild, we are able to deepen our impact, on the species, ecosystem and people alike. This is not only achieved by the facilitation and implementation of rigorous social and environmental practices, but through the global voice that FairWild gives this precious plant and the passionate people that live alongside it.”
